YES Challenge 2022

Please join us in congratulating the WINNERS in our 2022 Springfield Chamber of Commerce YES Challenge!

The top 4 finalists, all young entrepreneurs in the RM of Springfield ranging in ages 12-16, all having unique, creative, fun and innovative business ideas, presented their business idea live for our judging panel on Sunday, June 12th at the Chickendaze main stage. They all did an incredible job at showcasing their business, their entrepreneurial knowledge and their ability to answer the judges’ questions regarding their business and where it will go in the future.

As hard as the decision was, and as much as we would have loved to give all the young entrepreneurs the first-place title, we are so excited and so honored to introduce to you the 2022 YES Challenge WINNER…

Ronan & Owen DePaulo, 3 Ideas Canada!

Ronan (age 14) and Owen (age 12) started a business together creating quality products for the outdoors. After the two brothers both had experiences with broken fishing rods, they knew there had to be a better storage solution and designed a fishing rod holder made of 14-gauge polished stainless steel. Each piece is laser-cut, formed to shape, hand polished, packaged, and sent directly to you.

The rod holder is a one-time purchase and can be mounted vertically, horizontally or even from the ceiling to make sure your rods stay safe.

Our 2nd place winner is Eric Bartel, age 16, who is looking to start his own skate sharpening business called, Bertle’s Skate Shop. Eric will provide a fast and convenient skate sharpening at an affordable price to local residence in the Springfield area, even offering a travelling service to maximize the skate sharpening experience.

Eric is hoping to have his business up and running before the next hockey season, so watch for his business opening soon!

In 3rd place, Nina Ruml, age 14 and a student at SCI, owner of a jewlery business called, Thread and Bling by Nina.

Nina creates affordable, trendy and good quality products that she knows teens will love. She has been selling her jewlery and friendship bracelets on Etsy for over a year now and is now looking to expand her business and offer a higher quality product at a same affordable price.

To see all of Nina’s products and to purchase Nina’s jewlery, go to http://www.etsy.com/ca/shop/ThreadAndBlingByNina…

In 4th place, Mitchell Robak, age 16, has created an eco-friendly repair business called “Heat to Your Feet” to sell sneakers and luxury items. Mitchell purchases worn out and broken brand name items and repairs them for re-sale.

He says, “this is a passion and a hobby and a lifestyle all in one”, and he wants to see people own high-priced brand name items that they want and love, but at an affordable price.

Mitchell is currently working on increasing his inventory and hoping to have his business on social media very soon.

Once again, congratulations to all of winners and also to all of the young entrepreneurs who took the time to submit their videos for consideration for this contest.

We would also like to thank our Sponsors; SIO Silica, Pineridge Hollow, GeeTee Holdings and Imagine You Marketing & Design and a huge thank you to our judging panel, Dallas Hiebert (GeeTee Holdings), Betty Asseiro (Symatree Farms), Laura Weeden (SIO Silica), and Anya Misner (Honeywell Beetique & the 2021 YES Challenge Winner), and to all of the Chickendaze staff who helped with the set up of this event.

What You Need to Know If You Want to Run for Council

Have you thought about getting into municipal politics? Giving back to your community through public service?

The Springfield Chamber of Commerce, in conjunction with The Clipper Weekly, is sponsoring a ‘What You Need to Know If You Want to Run for Council’ event. This pre-election information session will be held on May 25 at 7 p.m. at the Springfield Public Library in Dugald.

Individuals who have been elected serve an important role in their municipality. As an elected local government, council charts the course of a municipality into the future. They make decisions that affect every resident and property owner in the municipality. Considerable trust has been placed in council to govern the municipality objectively, fairly and most importantly, with the public’s best interest in mind.

The upcoming What You Need to Know If You Want to Run for Council event will provide information and advice for those interested in running for a council position in the October municipal elections. The format will include a Q&A session and panel discussion.

Two speakers currently lined up to address the gathering include RM of Springfield senior election official Gloria Widerski and former Springfield councillor Shandy Walls. At least one more speaker from the field of municipal administration is planned. “Take it from me, there are dozens of reasons you want to attend this session if you are even considering running for local council; time commitments, meeting schedules, how effective you can actually be if you have a specific agenda, the actual role of elected officials vs. staff… the list goes on and on,” Walls said. “I went in blindly, and to this day I wish I would have more thoroughly educated myself.”

The event can be attended in person or via zoom, and participants who register early will receive an advance information package from Elections Manitoba.

For more information, please reach out to the chamber via email at info@springfieldcommerce.com or call 204-470-0272.

Perogy-Fest 2022

Perogy-Fest 2022!

April 1 to 18

We were so excited to introduce the first annual Springfield Chamber of Commerce (SCC) Perogy-Fest!

Springfield is blessed to be home of a strong vibrant Ukrainian-Canadian community. We have the Immaculate Conception Ukrainian Greek Catholic church and spectacular Grotto in Cooks Creek. The Ukrainian National Cemetery on Lorne Hill Rd. There are two performing Ukrainian dance ensembles, Selo and Mohutniy. Our school division offers Ukrainian Bilingual Programs to continue the teachings of Ukrainian traditions and heritage.

Chances are, if you live here, you have Ukrainian descent and if you don’t, you probably have connections with someone that does. At the very least, you’ve tasted the wonderous Ukrainian dish… the perogy! After all, we’re also home of Hazelridge the Perogy Capital of Canada.

We reached out to all the communities of Springfield to raise awareness of our local food establishments. Participating restaurateurs, caterers, specialty food creators and community kitchens who created a special perogy offer.

Participants donated 10% (or ,more) of net proceeds to the Springfield Chamber of Commerce and a total donation was made to the Ukraine Humanitarian Crisis Appeal (Canadian Red Cross) of $3,000!

Congratulations to our participant, Doreen Palidwor for winning Perogy-Fest 2022. When we reached out to Doreen to share the exciting news, this is what she had to say about her experience being a participant in Perogy-Fest.

“I am so humbled by the amount of people that ordered perogies. 505 dozen made in three weeks! Thank you to all who supported this wonderful fundraiser.

It is important to me to make perogies the traditional way and that keeps them homemade. Thank you to Ann Sokal and Martha Kowalchuk for teaching me how to carry on making this popular Ukrainian classic that so many people enjoy.”
